The New Law

On June 30, 2023 Michigan implemented a ban on all electronic device usage while behind the wheel. This makes it illegal to use cell phones while driving, unless some form of voice prompted, hands free technology is assisting you.

Under the new ban, it is now illegal to support a phone or other device with your hands, arms, or shoulders. There is no exception for quick one-line texts, social media scrolling, or music selection.  Either drive with your full attention on the road ahead—or face the consequences of the law.

How to Adjust

News of this new law may have come as a shock to individuals who have grown accustomed to using their phones in the car. While the intention of the ban is to keep people safe, there is no denying the difficulties it poses for professionals whose jobs require them to be phone-available 24/7.

To get around this ban while still remaining within the confines of the law, one is allowed to use voice prompted technologies (like Siri) to initiate a text or call. However, you cannot use your hands beyond a single touch, while initiating this voice command.

It is recommended that if you do plan to continue taking calls in the car, you get a dashboard or window mounted phone holder to keep the phone out of your hands and remain in compliance with the ban. These are also great for individuals without built in navigation systems who want to use their phones for GPS guidance.
