Stay Safe During Michigan’s 100 Deadliest Days: What You Need to Know

After months of cold, grey weather we, as Michiganders, are quick to embrace the warm weather as soon as summertime arrives. With thousands of lakes, beautiful scenery, and outdoor destinations, it is no surprise that Michigan roads seem to fill up around summer time. However, as we approach Memorial Day, and the start of the warm weather season, it is extremely important to remind ourselves and loved ones around us to exercise extra precaution on the road, as Memorial Day marks the beginning of the 100 deadliest days in Michigan.

What Makes it so “Deadly”

Occurring between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the 100 deadliest days is the most dangerous time of year on the road for Michiganders.

Even though it may be hard to believe, as the roads are in the best condition they will be all year (free from snow or ice), this stretch of summer sees a sharp increase in traffic fatalities, especially among teen drivers.

The time frame between Memorial Day and Labor Day consists of over 35% of all the traffic crashes that happen throughout the year. As a result, traffic related fatalities usually increase by 15%-17% during this time period compared to the rest of the year.

As a result of school being out, teen drivers usually pose the most danger during the summer months, proving to be three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash per mile driven compared to adult drivers. On average, out of the 63 total fatal car crashes involving a teenager that happen throughout the year, 23 of them occur within this time period.

Understanding the Danger

As discussed in our previous blog regarding the 100 deadliest days in Michigan, there are a multitude of other reasons why the roads become more dangerous during the summer months in Michigan.

Some of the many reasons include:

Steering Clear of Danger

To avoid these potential dangers on the road during this time of year, drivers should be especially alert and intentional about road safety. Always stay sober behind the wheel, remain awake and alert, and avoid any distractions. Also, avoid driving during high-risk times like late nights, holiday weekends, etc. Overall, drivers must be able to perform the basic driving fundamentals at a high level in order to ensure safety during this dangerous season.

Choose Safety

By practicing the steps listed above as well as other basic driving fundamentals, drivers do not only protect themselves and the people in their car, they also protect the people around them, contributing towards a safer road environment.

This summer, ensure that you and the people around you are carrying out all of the steps to remain as safe as possible, helping to turn a historically dangerous season to a safer one for all.
